Church and Black House Benbecula

I took this photograph back in 1971 when visiting Benbecula with a pal between medical finals, results and my Wedding. Oh the confidence of youth!
Next to the church is a pile of rocks which are the remnants of a "black house", previously thatched and with a mud floor. Humans co-habited with their animals and disease was rife.
I only learned about the black houses when visiting the Uists in 2014 with my younger son, Andy. Life for those people must have been really hard
